There is still an end goal this season for Leamington despite losing their National League North status. Scott Easterlow has made no secret of his desire to win the Birmingham Senior Cup after coming so close with neighbours Racing Club Warwick two seasons ago, and he watched on as his side cantered into a Semi Final tie with Hednesford Town with a goal filled display chock full of confident football.

Managed by Harry Harris, who spent a brief spell at Leamington during Paul Holleran’s first few months in charge, Coleshill Town arrived in the thick of the Northern Premier League Midlands Division Play Off chase, but the two division gap was evident here despite the fact that they never stopped trying to play throughout.

Easterlow restored Ty Lewthwaite, Owen Farmer and Frank Tattum to his starting line up as a statement of intent, and was richly rewarded with a delightful first half display, but the early stages were nip and tuck, with both sides intent on displaying their attacking credentials. The visitors saw Eddie Brearey push the ball onto his crossbar from an early corner as the game commenced at a frantic pace.

Tattum had a chance to get off the mark when he was played into the box at pace on the right, but experienced Town keeper Cam Belford kept him out.

Farmer set up Lewthwaite, who saw his shot on the turn blocked at source, but the ball came back to him and he set up Adam Walker for another effort that was also blocked.

Brakes were looking to attack at pace every time they went forward, and Tattum saw another effort blocked as he looked for space on the edge of the Coleshill penalty area. Lewthwaite then thundered a shot against the outside of the post as the ball dropped over his shoulder.

The ball was taking on a life of its own at times on the dry playing surface, and it almost caught Brearey out as Leamington failed to properly get the ball clear, a shot coming in that almost beat the Brakes keeper as it bounced up in front of him, but he was alert enough to push the ball away as an attacker closed in.

Walker saw another shot deflected behind for a corner on the left, which came to nothing as the Referee decided he had seen an infringement, but it mattered not, as within seconds Leamington were in front. Belford attempted a pass across his penalty area to move the ball forward, but it was intercepted by Lewthwaite, who steadied himself before thumping it into the empty net for his second goal in as many games.

Ben Usher-Shipway danced into the box for the Colemen, firing a dangerous ball into the six yard box, but the attempt at goal was cleared.

Some unorthodox ball control from Lewthwaite saw him use his giant frame to shield the ball well, and he laid off for Farmer to cross to the far post, where Dan Meredith blazed well over.

Just before the half hour a quick thinking piece of play from Leamington resulted in a penalty being awarded. Lewthwaite, Farmer and Max Brogan were all involved, the former flicking the ball over a defender’s head for the latter to run onto, and he was clattered into as he shaped to cross from the dead ball line. The Scunthorpe loan man picked himself up, and sent Belford the wrong way from the penalty spot for his fourth goal in Gold and Black.

The new found confidence in the side was evident, and when Bassit Mandey saw a shot blocked at one end Farmer initiated the counter attack, sending Brogan into space, but he just failed to find Tattum. However, within seconds Leamington were three goals up - Belford pushing Tattum’s shot out as far as Meredith, who slammed it back into the net.

The visitors were reeling now, and fell further behind six minutes before half time when Walker sent in a delightful cross that was guided home by the head of Lewthwaite for his second of the evening.

Farmer was desperate to get on the scoresheet, and after a driving run at the Coleshill defence he sent a screaming effort just past the angle of post and crossbar.

Coleshill started the second half well; Usher-Shipway setting off on a driving run with Taylor Carter-Byrne in support, but the former Brakes midfielder picked out Tristan Dunkley, who drove a low first time strike across goal and well wide. Carter-Byrne quickly went close with another effort, before at the other end Lewthwaite saw his shot well held by Belford.

Tim Berridge, Eric Yahaya and Will Glennon were introduced in place of Joe Clarke, Farmer and Tattum, but this did not disrupt the attacking flow of the game, and Yahaya set up Brogan to drive inside a couple of defenders and drive through Belford for Leamington’s fifth of the evening seven minutes into the second half. He swiftly followed that up with his hat trick strike two minutes later, sidestepping a challenge before driving low past a dejected Belford.

Lewthwaite really should have notched his treble as he was played clean through with the Coleshill defence seemingly waiting for an offside flag, but it was almost as if he was expecting to be flagged off himself, as the ball rolled into the grateful arms of Belford. Yahaya then beat a defender before driving just over the crossbar.

To their utmost credit Coleshill continued to try and take the game to Leamington, but Brakes were enjoying themselves on and off the pitch, and almost scored a seventh after an almighty penalty box scramble.

Lewthwaite came within inches of a spectacular third when he hit a ferocious volley just over the bar, before his neat backheel found substitute Tim Berridge, whose effort was saved by Coleshill’s replacement keeper Jack Higgs. Yahaya did well to head a late effort at Higgs, before Meredith did superbly to keep the ball in on the touchline before beating a defender and pulling the ball back for Yahaya, whose shot was kept out by Higgs.

N.B.
CTFC have played Leamington just Four times (as far as my research is aware) and have Lost all four, without scoring.
